STEP 2 – CITRUS BASICS

Citrus Oils each have their own unique aromas, but they share many of the same chemical properties. Understanding the basics of Citrus Essential Oils is helpful in knowing how to use them individually and in combination with each other.

Citrus Oils come from the rinds/peels of fruit and are usually cold pressed, although some can also be collected via steam distillation. They can be used aromatically, topically, or internally. They are mood uplifting, cleansing (for skin, detoxing the body, and using as household cleaners), and great for supporting the immune system.

You can often use Citrus Oils interchangeably, but they each have their own strengths. Here’s a quick cheat sheet of Citrus Oil specialties:

LEMON: Probably the most well-known of all Citrus Oils, Lemon is perfect for any type of cleansing. It can clean anything from grimy, germy surfaces to sticky residue and also helps cleanse and detoxify your body’s systems.

GRAPEFRUIT: If you’re looking to support a healthy metabolism, look no further than Grapefruit. It’s the perfect oil to diffuse or add to your water while dieting or trying to lose weight to increase motivation.

LIME: Lime really shines in the kitchen. It enhances the flavor of many dishes, including salsas, desserts, marinades, and meats. It’s also a must-have for grilling and seasoning.

BERGAMOT: What makes Bergamot unique are its calming, relaxing properties. Whereas most Citrus Oils are uplifting, invigorating, and energizing, Bergamot is soothing, which makes it a great choice for sleep blends.

TANGERINE: Interestingly, tangerines are very similar to mandarins, and in fact, some cultures do not distinguish them from each other. Tangerine Essential Oil makes a great addition to drinks: you can use it to flavor water, teas, lemonade, and smoothies.

WILD ORANGE: Wild Orange is a classic and quite popular Citrus Oil. Its aroma is uplifting and energizing, it’s great for the immune system and the skin, and is often used for cleaning.
